Professionals
Compassion Fatigue or Burnout
You are always giving in your professional life, now give back to yourself … it’s the best thing you can do.
Do any of these symptoms sound familiar? Once an energetic and dedicated mother…..now cynical, tired, and lonely. Angry at the stresses of work and gains little satisfaction with clients whom seem demanding and constantly asking more and more.
Like many other professionals, “compassion fatigue” looks much like “career burnout” with a deep physical, emotional, and spiritual exhaustion accompanied by acute emotional pain. Those who have experienced compassion fatigue describe it as being sucked into a vortex that pulls them slowly downward. They have no idea how to stop the downward spiral, so they do what they have been taught to do since college: they work harder and continue to give to others until they’re completely tapped out.
Compassion fatigue is flourishing today, because the demands placed on all professionals are much greater than ever before. To those who are in the throes of compassion fatigue, time, or more precisely the lack of it, is the enemy. To compensate, many try to do several things at once - eat lunch, while having filling out reports, and returning phone calls - and to make more time, they tend to eliminate the very things that would help revitalize them; regular exercise, interests outside of work, relaxed meals, time with family and friends, prayer and meditation.
Burnout is more than just feeling down or having a bad day. It is chronic and it is being out of sync with your job and your life.
As someone who assists others it might be difficult to reach out for help when you are depressed, stressed, anxious or facing relationship difficulties but you must first be healthy to be able to be your best.
If you see shades of yourself – there is hope and Terri Clinton Dichiser can help!
